Visit the hilly world of Cerkljansko
, a landscape that has been shaped so mysteriously over many centuries by nature as well as by the industrious inhabitants' hands. Everybody who enjoys snow-covered slopes in winter is invited to the modern ski centre Cerkno. We can offer you accomodation at the Hotel Cerkno, in numerous private rooms and apartments in the vicinity of the ski slopes or elsewhere in the unspoiled Cerkljanska. In the summer months you can stop at the partisan hospital Franja in the Pasice gorge, visit the Kamlonarše home and the birthplace of the writer France Bevk in Zakojca. You can take a walk to the picturesque archaeological site Divje babe, hidden above the Idrijca valley, where the oldest instrument in Europe was found in a karst cave in palaeolithic layers - a Neanderthal pipe older than 55,000 years.
Cerkljanska does not only boast a rich cultural heritage, which is familiar to the handful of those among you who have already visited the somewhat remote green valleys, romantic ravines, extensive forests and sunny plateaus. The rich, hilly, unspoiled nature, together with numerous natural and cultural sights and exceptionally hospitable people, who will serve you the local food, will undoubtedly fascinate you and convince you to keep returning.

Additional description : Cerkno is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of Cerkljanska, which has 5115 inhabitants (2002). It lies 324 m above sea level in a basin on the border between the Primorska and Gorenjska regions, between the Alpine and the Dinaric land. Across the area natural passes lead from the Poljanska and Selška Valleys in the direction of the Idrijca Valley and further on towards the Soča Valley.
It was first mentioned in 1232. The area was settled already in prehistory, the proof of which is the archaeological site Divje babe. In the 7th century Cerkljanska witnessed the migrations of the Slavs from the Škofjeloško hribovje towards the Soča Valley and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The passage used to serve also as a cargo route. From the 11th to the 14th century the secular sovereign of these parts and the neighbouring Tolminska was the Aquileia Patriarchate. Between 1420 and 1509 the area was under the Venetian administration, after which it was joined to the Habsburg estates in the Gorica county for three centuries. In the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy Cerkno was a square, the seat of the district court and the tax office. During the Second World War it was for a long time the centre of an extensive partisan freed territory.
