Kostanjevica is the centre of the karstic part of the community of Miren- Kostanjevica and has a government local office, a school, a nursery school, a post office, a bank, an outpatients’ department and a fire station. It is said that herdsmen that settled here in 1460 gave the name to the village after the chestnut forest Ferned. Wood from the surrounding forests was sold abroad, mostly in Venice. According to the plans of the architect Maks Fabiani a new village was built on this site, which was very different from the former one. In the vicinity, on Grmača, is a prehistoric ancient fort. Remains of the significant railway line Dutovlje/Skopo – Kostanjevica can still be seen. The extremely interesting trains that run on this line were constructed by the famous constructor Ferdinand Porsche and were called “B ZUG”. They had a special characteristic: the locomotive of the train was able to pull wagons but was unable to push them or to run backwards. In the Kostanjevica’s vicinity are three Karst caves: Globočišna jama, Lukinova jama and Dobantova jama cave. The latter is called Zlata jama (Golden cave) because the Austrians and later also the Italians sought gold in it.
