Cultural events: HISTORY OF NOVO MESTO AND ITS MOVABLE HERITAGE (Exhibition)
Within the framework of European Capital of Culture, The Museum of Dolenjska will present the urn artistry of Novo mesto with an exhibition of documentary photography and a prestigious monograph on urns from Novo mesto. In the early Iron Age period (8th - 4th century BC), Novo mesto was a large center of population with a large fortified settlement on Marof hill, around which several barrow cemeteries and individual burial mounds have been found. The archaeological excavations, which have been taking place ever since the end of the 19th century, have revealed fifty-three earthen mounds with over thousand studied graves from the early Iron Age, which included a large number of archaeological artifacts. Among them, there are nine bronze urns that represent the height of artistic expression of Iron Age Europe. As an important contribution to global cultural heritage, urns from Novo mesto remind us of the important role Dolenjska region had in the first millennium BC in development of European culture. The urn artists from Novo mesto were among the leading creators in a period when European civilization was only emerging. As the keeper of this important heritage, The Museum of Dolenjska strives to present the public the urns whose aesthetic values still shine after so many centuries, even though they were cast in fragile bronze. Opening Hours: Monday-Friday: 9:00-18:00; Saturday+Sunday: 9:00-13:00 in14:00-17:00.

Trip / Excursion: Idrija - on the Mercury Route
The technical heritage of Idrija, formed above the Idrija Mercury Mine and developed together with it over the centuries, will be presented to you on the tour of the main technical monuments, all recently renovated, which bear witness to the magnificence of our oldest mining town. You will take a walk around the town with a local guide and learn about the development of the town. Then, you will visit Anthony’s Shaft where you will descend into the underground of the Idrija Mercury Mine and learn about the extraction of the ore, about the mining techniques in different periods, and about the work and lives of miners.   In Idrija, a special type of house of Slovenia was formed in the past – the Idrija miner's house. This residential building, nowadays a museum, was built in the second half of the 18th century. In 1910, 18 people lived in it. In this renovated miner's house, arranged as a museum, you will get to know numerous stories about the lives of the Idrija miner and his family.      The exterior of the house gives an impression of a prominent building, it is surrounded by gardens and the ground floor is furnished as a typical miner’s apartment from the first half of the 20th century After visiting the miner’s house, you will take a walk across a part of the town called ‘Na lejnštatu’ to the Idrija Kamšt, a wooden motive wheel 13,6 m in diameter, which was a part of the mechanism used to pump water out of the depths of the mine. These kinds of wheels – kamšti – operated in several parts of Idrija until the beginning of the 20th century. On the platform above the Kamšt, old engines are displayed, which once served as a means of transport of the ore, and beside it, you can see the channel called ‘Rake’, which was constructed to ensure the constant flow of water on the wooden motive wheel. You can also rest your eyes during a short walk through the Scopoli’s Memorial Garden. After trying some excellent local traditional dishes, you will continue to learn about the importance of the Idrija technical heritage in the past centuries. A museum curator will guide you through a collection of restored mine steam and electrical machines, pumps and haulage machines, which are displayed for the public in the Frančiška's Shaft and you will end your tour in the Idrija Municipal Museum at the Castle Gewerkenegg, which hosts two exhibitions: ‘Five Centuries of the Idrija mine and town' and ‘Idrija Lace – a History Written in Thread’. Here, you will be able to connect everything you have seen and heard during the day in one place.

Trip / Excursion: Kindly invited to Idrija and Vojsko - the highest willage in Primorska region
Your tour will start with a visit to the tourist mine Anthony's Shaft, where over 1,200 meters of underground shafts leading from the oldest preserved mine entrance dating back to the year 1500 are open for tourists. For almost half a millennium, the miners walked the 300-meter-long shaft when going into the mine and returned exhausted from their daily labour the same way. In the middle of the 18th century, a stone chapel was built at the end of the shaft, featuring a relief of the Holy Trinity and two statutes of the miners’ patrons – St Acacius and St Barbara. You will see drops of mercury, trickling from black slate, get familiar with miners’ work and even meet the cave dwarf, Berkmandlc. The adventure ends with a 116-step climb up the Attem’s shaft. In the former register office, you can also take a look of the extensive and in-depth multimedia presentation of the history and heritage of the Idrija mine.  This is followed by a visit of the Idrija Municipal Museum at the Castle Gewerkenegg, which is one of the rare castles in Slovenia that never had a feudal function and mainly served the needs of the mine. In the museum, you can visit the exhibition about the 500-year history of the mercury mine and town, an extensive geological collection and a lace exhibition with a special exhibit – a 6m2-large lace tablecloth intended as a present to Jovanka Broz, Tito’s wife.        The tour will continue to Vojsko, where you will try local specialities in the PRI BELEM KAMNU Inn. After lunch, our guide will take you to the Partisan Printing House Slovenia, the partisan burial ground at Vojščica and the viewpoint Hudournik.   The Partisan Printing House belongs to the most well-preserved authentic monuments from World War II. It was the biggest and technically best equipped partisan printing house in the Primorska region.  At the most western part of the village Vojsko, there is a beautiful viewpoint Hudournik. From the top, you can see the lower part of the Idrijca Valley all the way to Most na Soči. Clearly visible are the villages in the Tolmin Hills, to the north you have a view of the Julian Alps with Triglav. On a clear day, you can see distant peeks of Matajur, Kolovrat and the Italian Dolomites.

Trip / Excursion: Kindly invited to Idrija and Cerkno region
To present the Idrija – Cerkno region in a one-day trip is a difficult task, since it is, with its numerous specifics and a diverse surface, definitely one of those regions where a few hours just fly by. You will start the tour in Idrija, where you will first visit Castle Gewerkenegg. It was built in the 16th century as an administrative building for the mercury mine and served as a storage facility for this precious metal. Today, it hosts the Idrija Municipal Museum, where the visitors can learn about the half-millennium history of the mercury mine, the town of Idrija and the Idrija lace.    You will continue the tour with the visit to the tourist mine Anthony's Shaft, where over 1,200 meters of underground shafts leading from the oldest preserved mine entrance dating back to the year 1500 are open for tourists. After lunch, where you will taste and get to know the traditional Idrija žlikrofi with mutton sauce – ‘bakalca’ – and other local specialities, you will continue your way towards Cerkno and visit the Cerkno Museum and in the nearby Novaki, the Partisan Hospital Franja. Partisan Hospital Franja, an authentic monument from World War II, bears witness to humanity and resourcefulness of the then personnel. It was here, in the narrow Pasice gorge, that the doctors, medical staff and others saved lives and took care of the severely wounded soldiers of the partisan army during the harsh months of the German occupation of the Slovenian territory.

Cultural events: The Mummy and the Crocodile: The Slovenians Exploring the Lands along the Nile
After nearly a century, the National Museum of Slovenia is putting on display the Egyptian Collection of its predecessor, the Provincial Museum of Carniola. The exhibition reveals the stories of three Slovenian Egyptologists who brought the objects in the collection over to Slovenia. It is not widely known today that a number of successful explorers of Africa were Slovenian, despite the fact that the achievements of the Slovenian Egyptologists Anton Lavrin, Ignacij Knoblehar, and Josef Švegel (Josef Schwegel in German) were on a par with those of their contemporaries exploring the ancient Egyptian civilization. Apart from the objects that the three Egyptologists donated to the Provincial Museum of Carniola, it was also the stories of their experiences in exotic lands that stirred the imagination of the Slovenian public of their time. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the mummy of Isahta (A-Keswy-Ta), a priest of Amon, which aroused great public interest at the time it was brought over to Ljubljana along with a stuffed crocodile. The mummy kept at the National Museum is the only human mummy to be held in Slovenia.

Cultural events: Emona: A City of the Empire
The exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the Roman city of Emona, built two millenniums ago on the site of the present-day Ljubljana. Learn about the city's birth, life and decline, the everyday life of its residents, and the heritage they left behind. The Roman colony Emona was founded on the site of the present-day Ljubljana almost precisely 2000 years ago. The remnants of the city, which had existed for 500 years, were being explored already in the Middle Ages. Since then, the knowledge about the ancient predecessor of Ljubljana has grown tremendously, but the most recent archaeological explorations carried out in the centre of Ljubljana have yielded yet another set of remarkable new findings.
