Lesce

The town of
Lesce is widely considered the Carniola region's earliest pilgrimage destination for the Mother Mary. It is thought that the first church stood here during Roman times – in the fourth century. Today, the parish church is one of the most noteworthy Baroque monuments in the whole of the Gorenjska region.
The standalone church tower features a Gothic portal with the year of construction, 1522–23, inscribed thereon.

In the middle of the twelfth century, the old church, which was dedicated to Mary and attracted many pilgrims, was demolished and a replacement built in its stead. It was during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that the church acquired its present-day Baroque appearance. In 1736, Franc Jelovšek painted an illusionary portrayal of the Assumption of Mary in the presbytery.
The high altar, which is dedicated to the Mother of God, dates back to the eighteenth century. The throne features a portrayal of Mary with Jesus on her lap and a crown on her head. The sides of the altar include statues of Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne; at the top, a painting of the Holy Trinity takes pride of place in the middle, with statues of St Apollonia and St Agata on either side.
The church's interior also features the crests of noble families and the states that followed. The crests of the Ortenburgs, counts of Cilli, Habsburgs, and Thurns, as well as crests of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and Slovenia are displayed.
