The island Mariborski otok, a unique type of river island in Slovenia, lies in the immediate vicinity the Kamnica settlement, which from the centre of Maribor, in the direction of Koroška, is about five kilometres. The island can be reached by setting off along the nice paths along the river Drava. The island itself is a lively recreation spot.
From the hustle and bustle of the city into nature
Two paths lead to the island: a picturesque path on the left bank of the Drava past the bay Koblerjev zaliv and the road to Kamnica, which then branches off towards the river Drava. Also the island itself is a pleasant promenade, in the summer season it is particularly lively here as on the island there is an outdoor swimming pool complex.
What has made it unique?
The island formed on the basis of marine marl with secondary deposits of river sediments just behind the onetime rapids of the Drava. Behind the rapids due to reduced transport capacity the river namely began to deposit alluvial sand, gravel and river sand.
Owing to its advantageous position the island is a habitat for forest and meadow plants, which the river Drava brings from the Alps. It is known for its very diverse vegetation, as on the island there are about 15 tree and 20 shrub species
