The rolling, scenic Polhov Gradec Hills are recognised for their hilltops: mighty Polhograjska Gora or St Lawrence Hill (824 m), broad-shouldered Pasja ravan (1019 m), also called Pesjanski vrh by Valvasor, and pointed Grmada (898 m). Their highest member is lush Tošč (1021 m). Wonderfully picturesque, these tops are very eye-catching. Also charming are small churches, numerous hamlets with secluded farms, spectacular views and warm, friendly people.

It is the bedrock that gives the region its colourfulness: slate and sandstone below, above mostly dolomite, in places limestone. Surface dolomite tends to moulder, so tops and ridges of dolomitic hills often take unusual, interesting forms, while limestone reveals genuine karst landscape with small subterranean caves.

Plant life and springs give away the underlying rock straightaway. Protected plants such as Blagay’s Daphne, Rose Daphne and holly can be seen on the many paths and trails.
