Tour of the Medieval City Core of Novo mesto

Print Add to travel planner
Begin at the Miran Jarc Library near Gornja vrata (“Upper Gate”) and walk to Glavni trg square with the Rotovž City Hall, the stone fountain, and the Franciscan Church of Sv. Lenart. Visit the rich library in the Monastery and continue your walk around Glavni trg to the Jakčev dom Gallery, which has 828 of the artist’s paintings, drawings, and graphic works. Nearby is the famous Breg quarter with its picturesque houses built on the remains of the medieval wall. You should also visit the exhibitions of the Dolenjska Regional Museum, especially the archeological exhibition, which ranks at the top in Slovenia and in some subjects at the very peak in Europe. Only a few meters further on stands the Chapter Church of Sv. Miklavž, the oldest architectural monument in the city. Enter this beauty from 1429 and admire the altar painting depicting the assumption of St. Nicholas by the Renaissance painter Tintoretto. In the Provost’s House behind the church, you can visit a gallery, a library, and a multivision presentation.
