All parts of Slovenia are crossed by a variety of hiking trails that allow you to genuinely experience its natural beauty. The majority of the trails can be hiked throughout the year, provided that you are properly equipped and the weather so allows. Given the huge popularity of hiking in Slovenia, it is very likely that you will never be alone on a trail. Be sure to see that others can enjoy the trail as much as you by leaving it clean and undamaged.
Hiking along the majority of the trails on our list requires only the basic hiking equipment:
- suitable hiking shoes (comfortable, soft-heeled but with a strong sole and firm grip; on trails running primarily on roads and lowlands, shoes are enough, but on upland trails strong boots are more suitable) - clothes suitable for the season - a backpack for snacks, drinks and maps; the backpack can also carry a rain cape, and a cap and sun cream during the summer - hiking poles
Many trails on our list of interpretive trails, thematic trails and mountain trails give GPS coordinates for the starting points. The entire trail will eventually be downloadable to GPD devices in digital form via our website at www.slovenia.info.
The majority of Slovenia’s mountain trails and other hiking trails are marked by a red and white round sign known as Knafelc blaze after their designer, Alojz Knafelc. They have been used since 1922. In some places trails are marked with special markings and signposts.
On the trail with a guide
The majority of the trails on our list can be visited with a guide after arranging in advance. Hiring a mountain guide for the more demanding trails in the high mountains is particularly advisable on the grounds of safety. Guides can also be a good idea on trails where you want to learn more about the surroundings.
