In Slovenia, smoking is banned in
all closed public and
work premises, in other words including catering and accommodation establishments. You must be at least
18 years old to
buy tobacco products. This makes Slovenia one of the European countries with the strictest limits on smoking.
Heavy fines
In practice, the law is being respected well. There are practically no premises where smoking is allowed, since there is the threat of heavy fines, especially for the owner, tenant or manager of premises that must impose the smoking ban.
Companies can be fined between 2,000 and 33,000 euros for violations, sole traders between 800 and 4,000 euros and the responsible person in a company from 400 to 1,000 euros.
A penalty of 125 euros must be paid by an individual who smokes in a place where it is banned.
Smoking rooms
The
exception envisaged in the law is smoking rooms. These are closed spaces that are physically separate and arranged especially for smoking. Waiter
service is not permitted in smoking rooms, and no food or drink can be consumed in them. The smoking room must be arranged so no air carrying tobacco smoke can flow into another room.
ID checks in shops
When you buy tobacco products, the vendor may ask you to prove your age by showing your
ID or personal document. If you refuse, you cannot be sold the product.
The same applies for purchasing alcoholic beverages in Slovenia, where only those 18 or over can buy alcohol.
