The pilgrimage trail from Bizeljsko to Nova Cerkev is a memorial footpath marked with yellow signs in the shape of an open book that the beloved chaplain and Slovenia’s only saint, Anton Martin Slomšek, often walked himself.
It runs in four stages: from Bizeljsko to Olimje, then to Kalobje, the third stage to Slom, and the last stage to Nova Cerkev.
You will pass through Bizeljsko, Kozjansko, the Zgornjesotelsko-Voglajnsko hills, and Konjiško-Vitanjske Karavanke mountains. Visitors are advised to bring good hiking equipment with them and the Slomšek Route booklet with its pages for stamps. The best seasons for the pilgrimage are spring and fall.
The trail is intended mostly for hikers but can also be followed by car. A few highlights on the trail are the church on Svete Gore, the Minorite monastery in Olimje, the Rifnik Archeological Park (37), the unique habitat of pasqueflowers (Pulsatilla grandis) near Ponikve, and Slomšek’s birth house (41).
